Biography

Bachir Bencheikh is an Algerian painter whose figurative paintings record landscapes, harbours and rural life. He paints outdoors, d'après nature, with his easel set up before the scene; the works in his 2024 exhibition were oil on canvas.

Many of his subjects come from Kabylie and from Algiers. Farm work recurs across his paintings, from ploughing and the olive harvest to grazing and tasks in the home. Urban views include the Casbah, the bay and Bab El Oued. Works shown in 2022 included Les moissonneurs and Champ de blé; La fileuse and Jour de marché followed in 2024.

Drawn to painting from a young age, Bencheikh first learned on his own. At the end of the 1960s he took specialised courses at the Société des Beaux-Arts in Algiers. He names Camille Leroy and Abderrahmane Sahouli as his teachers. He held solo exhibitions at Galerie Mohamed-Racim, Algiers, in 2022 and at Galerie d'Art Aïcha Haddad in 2024 and 2026.
