Ala Younis

Ala Younis, born in Kuwait in 1974, is an artist, curator and researcher based in Amman. She makes installations, videos, prints, drawings and publications from archive material, architecture and film, and her projects examine collective histories and the state's hand in shaping them.

Nefertiti (2008) is a video installation with defunct sewing machines. Tin Soldiers (2010 to 2012) brings together 12,265 metal figurines and a publication, and UAR (2014) uses drawings and found objects to examine how Gamal Abdel Nasser was represented. Plan for Greater Baghdad (2015), a set of two- and three-dimensional prints, was shown in All the World's Futures at the 56th Venice Biennale.

Her work was also in the 12th Istanbul Biennial (2011), the New Museum Triennial The Ungovernables in New York (2012) and the 9th Gwangju Biennale (2012). The New Museum showed An Index of Tensional and Unintentional Love of Land in 2014. She curated National Works, Kuwait's first national pavilion, at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013, and was a co-artistic director of the Singapore Biennale 2022. She graduated in architecture from the University of Jordan in 1997 and holds an MA in Research in Visual Cultures from Goldsmiths, University of London (2016).
