About

Zeyrek Çinili Hamam is a 16th-century double bathhouse in Zeyrek, Fatih, that now combines a working hammam, a museum and a contemporary art programme. Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha commissioned it and Mimar Sinan designed it. The Marmara Group acquired the building and began a 13-year restoration in 2010.

The museum, designed by Atelier Brückner, shows many finds where they were uncovered. More than 300 of some 3,000 İznik tile fragments are on view, with objects of bathing culture and excavation finds from the 5th century to the 20th.

Below the cold rooms, a Byzantine cistern found during the works hosts site-specific exhibitions, free to visit and supported by The Marmara Group. Artists come to Istanbul to research and produce new work for it. Recent shows include Anousha Payne, Juliette Minchin and Margaret R. Thompson. A permanent contemporary art collection is placed in the garden and in the hot and cold rooms.
