About

Villa Carl Ficke, Musée de la Mémoire de Casablanca is a museum devoted to the memory and heritage of Casablanca. It is run by the Fondation Nationale des Musées, a foundation created in 2011 that manages a network of museums in Morocco. The museum stands at 119, Boulevard de la Résistance.

The villa dates from the early twentieth century, when it was built for Carl Ficke, a German merchant. Arcades, coloured zellige tilework and a garden give the neo-Moorish house its mix of European and Moroccan features. Over the years the building has been a private residence, a children's home and an annex of the Collège Khnata Bent Bekkar. Under the French protectorate it served as a detention centre. Its restoration kept the original style and brought it up to museum standards.

Sculptures by the Moroccan artist Ikram Kabbaj are shown outside the villa. Inside, temporary exhibitions of contemporary art run alongside the displays on the city's past.
