About

Sinopale, International Sinop Biennial, is a contemporary art biennial in Sinop, Turkey, held every two years. Its name joins "Sinop" and "Bienale". The organiser describes it as Anatolia's first biennial. It was first held in 2006 and reached its tenth edition in 2026. T. Melih Görgün founded it. The Sinop Sustainable Development Association, a body of local volunteers, now organises and coordinates the biennial.

The organiser names its model "sharing-based art production". Visiting artists live in Sinop while they work and make participatory pieces about the city with its residents. The results are then shown in cultural buildings and public spaces across Sinop. The biennial is non-profit and depends on solidarity, volunteering and imece, or collective communal work.

Beside the exhibitions, its programme strands include Sinopale Çocuk for children, Sinopale Akademi, Sinopale Forum and Sinopale Film. According to the organiser, Sinop has received hundreds of visiting artists, researchers, academics and cultural workers through the biennial, from more than forty countries. The organiser also lists appearances abroad, among them the Werkleitz Biennale in Halle in 2013 and the Yokohama Triennale in 2017.
