About

Sadberk Hanım Museum stands in Büyükdere, on the Bosphorus in Sarıyer, Istanbul, and first welcomed visitors on 14 October 1980. The Vehbi Koç Foundation set it up in memory of Sadberk Koç, Vehbi Koç's wife, to show her collection. The museum calls itself Turkey's first private museum.

Its Turkish and Islamic section, in the Azaryan Mansion, shows İznik ceramics from the late 15th to the mid 17th century, alongside later Kütahya and Çanakkale wares. It also holds Seljuk to Safavid metalwork and glass, Ottoman silver, calligraphy, embroidery and women's costume. The Sevgi Gönül Building presents Anatolian archaeology from 6000 BC to the end of Byzantium.

The Azaryan Mansion dates from the late 19th century. The Koç family bought it in 1950 and used it as a summer house. The architect Sedat Hakkı Eldem converted it into a museum between 1978 and 1980. The museum stages temporary exhibitions with talks, publishes catalogues and runs a conservation laboratory, a library and a children's programme.
