About

Müze Gazhane is a public cultural campus in Hasanpaşa, Kadıköy, on the Anatolian side of Istanbul. It occupies the former Hasanpaşa Gasworks and opened to visitors on 9 July 2021. Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality restored the site between 2014 and 2021.

The gasworks entered service in 1892 and produced gas for lighting and fuel for 101 years, until 1993. A public campaign saved the abandoned buildings, which became a protected site in 1994. Architects at Istanbul Technical University, led by Afife Batur, drew up the conversion.

Art on the campus centres on the Cartoon and Humour Museum, which follows humour in Turkey through drawing across periods and movements. Galeri Gazhane, which opened with Serkan Taycan's Kente Doğru, hosts temporary exhibitions and is closed until its next calendar. In summer 2026 the campus showed Türkan Şoray and Yalçın Gökçebağ in Hatıralar Bahçesinde Buluşma, curated by İbrahim Karaoğlu. A climate museum, a children's science centre and a library complete the site.
