About

Jamaâ El-Fna, Musée du Patrimoine Immatériel is a public museum on Place Jamaâ el-Fna in Marrakech, run by the Fondation Nationale des Musées. The Fondation Nationale des Musées presents it as the first museum in Morocco devoted to the intangible heritage of the square. The museum was inaugurated in February 2023 after several years of restoration.

The museum occupies the former headquarters of Bank al-Maghrib. Built in 1922 to designs by the architects Auguste Cadet and Edmond Brion, the building housed the first branch of the Moroccan state bank. The Fondation Nationale des Musées restored it and gave it a new use.

The displays set out the history of Marrakech and of the square, which UNESCO inscribed as intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2008. Further sections cover the arts of the halqa and the hlaiqis and their crafts. A numismatic section pays homage to Bank al-Maghrib. One space shows the square through painting, theatre, cinema and photography. Two works by Jacques Majorelle hang alongside paintings by artists who shaped Moroccan painting. The museum's address is Rue Ibn Marine, Place Jamaâ el-Fna.
