MACAAL

MACAAL, the Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden, opened in Marrakech in 2016 as one of the first spaces on the continent dedicated to contemporary African art. It is a project of Fondation Alliances, founded in 2009 to promote culture and contemporary art in Africa and internationally, and is chaired by Othman Lazraq, with Meriem Berrada as artistic director.

The museum's collection numbers more than 2,000 works across painting, sculpture, photography, installation and digital art. Following major renovations it presents the collection through a permanent route of seven "contours" (Decolonize, Transcribe, Initiate, Cohabit, Converge, Promise and Weave), curated with Zamân Books & Curating, alongside temporary exhibitions, in-situ commissions such as Yassine Balbzioui's Crazy Lines, artist residencies and education programmes. Admission includes the Al Maaden Sculpture Park.
