About

The Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture belongs to Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University and occupies Antrepo 5, a former port warehouse in Tophane, Istanbul. It opened on 20 September 1937 and describes itself as Turkey's first museum of the plastic arts.

Its collection traces art in Turkey from the late Ottoman era through the whole 20th century, across painting, sculpture, ceramics and calligraphy. It began with 320 works and now holds close to 12,000, gathered through gifts and purchases. Works it sent out helped to found the museums of painting and sculpture in Ankara and Izmir. Temporary displays draw on the holdings, such as a selection of Naile Akıncı's landscapes shown in spring 2026.

The museum spent its first seven decades in the Crown Prince's Office at Dolmabahçe Palace, with the painter Halil Dikmen as its first director. It closed there in 2007, and the collection moved to Antrepo 5 in 2011. Emre Arolat Architecture converted the warehouse, designed by Sedad Hakkı Eldem, and the museum reopened in December 2021. It also runs a library, a conservation unit and education programmes.
