About
Ubuntu Art Gallery opened in Zamalek, Cairo, in October 2014. It was founded by Ahmed El Dabaa, who had been collecting and dealing in art since 2002 and who comes from a family background in antiques. The gallery takes its name from the Swahili word ubuntu, which it translates as "I am because we all are", and it describes a belief in how Egyptian history and society shape Egyptian identity as the core of its programme.
The gallery specialises in contemporary Egyptian art and secondary-market modern Egyptian art, running two simultaneous exhibitions across its two-storey headquarters as well as satellite shows, including at the Swan Lake Clubhouse in New Cairo. It has shown modern figures such as Samir Rafi, George Bahgoury and Ihab Shaker alongside contemporary artists including Sahar AlAmir, Mutaz Elemam and Hany Rashed, and it has taken part in Art Dubai Modern, 1-54 and CONTEXT Art Miami. It also hosts a monthly lecture series, Ubuntu Dialogues.
