A Munich gallery with a Beirut home since 2007, bridging international and Middle Eastern contemporary art.
About
Galerie Tanit was founded in Munich in 1972 by Naila Kettaneh-Kunigk and Stefan Kunigk, joined by Walther Mollier in 1981. In its early years it introduced artists such as Robert Rauschenberg (1975), Michael Heizer (1976) and Jasper Johns (1977) to German audiences, and through the 1980s and 1990s it became known for minimal and conceptual art.
The gallery opened its Beirut space, Espace Kettaneh-Kunigk, in 2007, and by 2012 had settled on the ground floor of the East Village building on Armenia Street in Mar Mikhael. The space was destroyed in the Beirut port explosion of 4 August 2020 and reopened on 19 June 2021. Since 2004 the gallery has placed particular emphasis on contemporary art from the Middle East, alongside the younger international artists it has shown since 2002.
