The Lounge: What Can a Room Remember?

Katara Art Center has opened its 2026 season with The Lounge: What Can a Room Remember?, the first solo exhibition by Qatari artist Hessa Al Kuwari. It runs from 2 September to 7 October 2026 in Katara Cultural Village, alongside the group show Fractures of the Future.

The subject is the living room and its place in the details of everyday life. Working across painting, photography and installation, Al Kuwari looks closely at the patterns, objects, furniture, clothing and rituals that fill these rooms, things that at first seem too ordinary and familiar to notice.

The project grew out of some twenty years of looking at living rooms across different parts of Qatar and watching their interiors change. Speaking to Al Sharq, she described wanting "to pause time to observe changes in the house and the memory of its details", and called the living room an informal anthropological tool for recording the course of life in Qatar.

She is alert to the telling juxtapositions of a society in quick transition: a traditional coffee pot sitting beside a modern water bottle, or cups, fabrics and furnishings that together form a composition of their own. In her telling, the room becomes something like an orchestra, where family members of different ages each have a presence and a voice.

For visitors from across the Gulf, the show will feel familiar, and that is its quiet strength. By treating the domestic interior as a record of collective memory, Al Kuwari gives weight to spaces that are rarely thought of as subjects for art.
