Le rose emplit l'atmosphère

Algerian painter Kahina Bouzid is showing around sixty paintings at Galerie Mohamed Racim in central Algiers in Le rose emplit l'atmosphère (Pink fills the air), an exhibition organised by the Établissement Arts et Culture that runs until 26 September 2026.

Self-taught, Bouzid began exhibiting in 2023 and has since shown in Algeria and abroad, in Jordan, Egypt and Turkey. Colour is her starting point. 'J'ai toujours travaillé le rose,' she told Horizons, explaining that she has lately dared to pair it with fluorescent orange, silver and bronze.

The works mix acrylic, oil, watercolour, gouache and marker. A new body of horse paintings, begun last December, is approached, in the artist's words, 'pas comme un animal, mais comme un symbole', while other canvases move into abstraction or return to the Casbah of Algiers. One painting, Enflammée, is a tribute to the victims of wildfires.

Abstraction, she says, frees her from pressure, and the exhibition has the energy of an artist still testing her range. It offers a snapshot of the self-taught painters who keep the public galleries of Algiers busy, in a venue named after the miniaturist Mohamed Racim.
