Sculptures, Furniture and Works on Paper

Sculptures, Furniture and Works on Paper is a solo exhibition of work by the French artist Bernar Venet at Waddington Custot, Alserkal Avenue, Dubai. It runs from 26 September to 31 October 2026.

The gallery presents the exhibition as a survey that draws three strands of Venet's work together. It writes: "Sculpture in steel is shown alongside Venet's furniture, which translates the geometry of the sculptures into functional form, and a group of works on paper that trace the conceptual logic running beneath all of it."

Venet has worked across a wide range of media since the early 1960s. The gallery lists tar poured onto canvas and cardboard and a heap of industrial coal claimed as sculpture. It lists paintings and drawings built from mathematical equations and scientific diagrams. It also names sound recordings, photography, performance, poetry and stage design. From the 1980s onward he made the Corten steel Arcs, Angles and Indeterminate Lines.

Venet was born in 1941 in Château-Arnoux, France. His Tas de charbon (Pile of Coal) dates from 1963. He settled in New York in 1966 and made his first Indeterminate Lines in 1979. In 2011 he presented a solo exhibition of monumental sculpture at the Château de Versailles. In 2022 a retrospective of his work opened at Kunsthalle Berlin, Tempelhof Airport.
