Jawad Al Malhi

Jawad Al Malhi (b. 1969, Shuafat Refugee Camp, Jerusalem) is a Palestinian artist who lives and works in Shuafat, where he grew up. He began by sketching camp life as a teenager and went on to make large-scale paintings, some on fabric UN aid sacks, alongside sculpture, photography, video and installation.

His work looks at communities and their surroundings, and at crowds in public spaces in moments of waiting. His solo exhibitions include Measures of Uncertainty at Al Ma'mal Foundation for Contemporary Art, Jerusalem (2014), and House No. 197 at ERG, Brussels (2017). The Barjeel Art Foundation holds Measures of Uncertainty VI and House Number 197.

He took an MFA at Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton, in 2007. He took part in Provisions for the Future at the 9th Sharjah Biennial (2009), dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel (2012), Climbing the Tide at the Kamel Lazaar Foundation, Tunis (2019), and Global Resistance at the Centre Pompidou, Paris (2020). He was shortlisted for the Frieze Foundation Cartier Award in 2009 and for the seventh Ithra Art Prize in 2026. His work is in the collections of the British Museum, the Centre Pompidou and the Imperial War Museum.
