Biography
Britt Boutros Ghali was born in Svolvær, Norway, in 1937 and has lived in Egypt since the mid-1970s, with studios in Cairo and Agami. She makes large, gestural abstract paintings in bursts of colour, working intuitively and without preliminary plans.
Her works include Untitled (Big Green Splash) and Untitled, Yellow, both from 2023. Her solo exhibitions include one at Almashrabia in Cairo (2020) and Hawanem (Women of My World) at Townhouse, Cairo (2023). Her 2025 exhibition at Galerie Son in Berlin was her first solo show in Germany since the 1970s. In 2011 she was in From Egypt with Love at Athr Gallery, Jeddah.
In 1996 she was made a Knight First Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav, and in 2023 she received a lifetime achievement award for women in the arts from the National Council for Women in Egypt.
