Adam Rouhana

Adam Rouhana (b. 1991, Boston) is a Palestinian-American photographer and artist based in Jerusalem and London. He photographs everyday Palestinian life. He grew up in Boston, visiting Palestine every year, began photographing at twelve and holds a master's degree from the University of Oxford.

His series Before Freedom, begun in 2022, portrays daily life in Jerusalem, Haifa, Akka, Hebron, Nablus and Bethlehem and sets these images against the West's conception of Palestinian society. For Not Just Memory: Khalil Raad and the Contemporary Gaze at the Palestinian Museum, Birzeit (2025), he made Permission to Narrate, large-format portraits taken in street studios in Bethlehem, Hebron and Jerusalem using Khalil Raad's techniques.

His first solo exhibition, Before Freedom: Adam Rouhana, curated by Amah-Rose Abrams, was held at Frieze No.9 Cork Street, London, in 2024. It was followed by Adam Rouhana. Before Freedom at Kunsthal Rotterdam (2024 to 2025) and The Logic of Truth at KYOTOGRAPHIE, Kyoto (2025), and Before Freedom was shown at the Copenhagen Photo Festival in 2026. He has worked under the guidance of the Magnum photographer Gilles Peress, and his work has been featured in Aperture.
